Montserrat Camargo’s work is nourished by personal experiences, interpreted and transformed through the eyes of the camera. There is a desire to bring the invisible quality of emotional control to the physical plane, by using one’s body as an object, at the mercy of another. The man in the video is not merely an actor, the artist knows him personally and he was crucial for the works conception, but by removing his face from the frame, the artist erases his identity and therefore leaves an ample margin of interpretation that explores universal themes of power. The work contains a subtle violence, and although it is not adversely sexual, it has clear sexual undertones that allude to the fear of being used. The doll like quality of the female figure, the male hands, the sound and the hair, help create a haunting quality that traps the viewer inside the artist’s world.
