Lives and works in Madrid

Montserrat Camargo is a Mexican visual artist and writer, currently based in Madrid. Her practice explores the preservation of intimacy through the creation of artistic situations that diverge from reality and follow their own ludic rules, thereby foregrounding playfulness and freedom. By means of embodied research, she uses intimacy as a methodology to approach affects and memories, integrating them in a sensorial way and creating works that preserve everyday storytelling. Assuming that one’s exact sensations are untransmissible, she seeks a visual articulation that can translate them to the public. This approach to making does not prioritize any single medium; although language is always present, she employs whatever medium best serves the exploration of a given subject.

Her work often takes on a ritualistic form, imbued with a sensual quality and developed in private spaces, where intimacy most frequently unfolds. To create visual tension, Camargo incorporates formal elements associated with classical notions of beauty in art, and then disrupts them by allowing life to emerge within them. She does not pursue technical perfection; rather, the process emphasizes joy and celebration, asserting that, in her practice, art stands in opposition to obligation, disconnection, and pre-established societal rules.
