Lives and works in Madrid

Montserrat Camargo is a Mexican visual artist and writer, currently based in Madrid.

In her practice Camargo combines language, textile and performance to build dispositifs for the regeneration of intimacy.
Drawing from her personal experience of displacement and estrangement with her mother tongue, she researches individual memories in order to archive intimacy and reactivate a space understood within the private; thus creating new forms of community. As a way of resistance in an internet era she recovers disappearing forms of intimacy, vernacular media and informal communication where language is not institutionalised. Within this frame, through repetition and prolonged duration, language becomes a current that passes through and exits her body turning into a material. As a result, the viewer often encounters a tension of a raw form, something almost half done, a bodily object where the presence of the artist still remains.
Emphasising joy and freedom she invites the audience to play with her by revealing secrets, stealing conversations, and reshaping gossip as a broadcast of intimacy; eventually, pushing us to interact with each other
